Do you support liberty
and justice for all?

On 3 June 2017, a group of hate-mongering bigots will be holding an event at Warwick City Park in Warwick, Rhode Island, to raise money to spend promoting hate crimes against innocent, responsible alcohol drinkers who are younger than 21. Supporters of liberty can address the hate group at its own event, since it is on city property.

It is obvious why so many politicians would rather impose tougher underage drinking laws on somebody else, than impose tougher DWI laws on themselves. A serious crackdown on DWI wouldn’t be fair to them, because they “can drive better drunk than teenagers can sober.”

The event sponsor, a group calling themselves “Mothers Against Drunk Driving,” is working for its auto industry sponsors, to perpetuate intense bureaucratic hostility against persons who don’t buy cars. If bureaucrats cared about pedestrians, would they erect traffic lights without crosswalk lights? Would they plow snow onto the sidewalks? Would they require parking lots for apartment houses, driving up walkers’ rents? Would they impose zoning restrictions that prevent persons from living closer to work?

The more a young adult drinks, the more he or she will avoid driving, demanding equal rights for walkers.

A serious DWI crackdown would mean more people riding the bus, allowing bus companies to extend their hours and routes, and more teenagers would find jobs without buying cars. MADD wants to get teenagers addicted to driving. Our nation’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders, and MADD wants them to see the world through a windshield.

Meanwhile, a lot of MADD supporters, having lost a family member, are desperately trying to pretend it’s not their own fault they drove drunk in the past, but the fault of a society that was soft on underage drinking. Many cannot even picture somebody drinking, and then not driving afterwards. Others cannot stand the fact that, every day, all across the U.S.A., many thousands of persons younger than 21 drink alcohol without driving afterwards.

It’s not that the MADD bigots are idiots. It’s just that good, sound, logical reasoning does not support their position, so they rely on bad reasoning: Statistical analysis of historical crash data proves that the United States of America ought not to be a free country, that it is okay to hire gun-toting goons in bulletproof vests to intimidate Mr. and Mrs. Twenty into total abstinence instead of meting out all the punishment to the drunk driver.

MADD argues that too many young persons have been killed in DWI crashes, which is true. Consider the crash in Burton, Ohio on 2 March 2006. The guilty driver, who was 47, was driving drunk (0.26% BAC), driving left of center, speeding, driving under suspension and leading a police chase, but at least he wasn’t drinking under age, a victory for MADD. He crashed head on into a car with three young adults, but at least he wasn’t buying for them, another victory for MADD. Andrew Hopkins and Grace Chamberlain were both 18, and they never got a chance to drink alcohol legally. A 19-year-old man from North Kingstown, Rhode Island, who happened to be in the back seat, spent weeks in Metro Hospital, getting his face put back together with plates and screws. While the guilty driver collected eleven prior DWI’s, MADD pushed for sting operations, keg registration laws, counterfeit-resistant ID’s and harsher punishments for being under 21. They don’t care about drunk driving, they just hate everybody under 21.

Outraged and stunned, the victims’ parents, and fellow students from Hiram College went to Columbus to lobby for a crackdown. They got a tougher repeat offender law introduced, overwhelmingly passed, and signed by the governor. Anybody who wants results does not need MADD.

Thought Experiment

If the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) strikes down the underage drinking statutes, what do you think State legislators would do?

If you said they would scramble to pass tougher DWI measures, you just admitted that they impose the drinking age on innocent persons instead of imposing tougher DWI measures.

If you support liberty and think logically, if you think the United States of America ought to be a free country, with liberty and justice for all, where the citizen decides what to drink and the drunk driver is the one that gets punished, you can address these hate-mongering MADD bigots at their own event, since it is on city property.
